Have a Free Comic Book Today
icon1 Justin | icon2 Uncategorized | icon4 05 16th, 2016| icon3Comments Off on Have a Free Comic Book Today

The other day (May 11th), I sent a free digital copy of Desert Rose to everyone who pledged to our Kickstarter campaign for Super. This was the book Gilbert did prior to Super, a simple yet sad story of an immigrant trying to cross the border and the horrible circumstance he finds himself in. There is an afterword by Gilbert that adds how he feels about the execution of the project in retrospect that I recommend reading.

We’ve decided to post it up as a “pay what you want” book for anyone out there in the universe who might want it, so please spread the word via social media and send people to https://gum.co/cBPkk to check it out!

See you folks back here in a couple weeks for issue two of Super!

Gumroad on My Shoe (Actually, on My Site)

I was looking for the best way to sell the digital versions of our books online as they come out. There are some free plugins that people who also use WordPress have made that are alright, but they seem to come in one of two categories: glorified “go to Paypal” buttons and carts for your unsecured, easily hackable website. Since I want a simple, secure way for people to pay and get our products, I decided I either needed to pony up and spend some money on this site or partner with an e-commerce company. This site doesn’t generate any revenue for me, so I went with the latter.

Gumroad will be the payment/fulfillment site all issues of Super and our other stuff will be released through until we’re in a better position to handle that on our own. Click on the link if you’re looking for something similar.

Issue one of Super is now available to purchase, so if you’re one of our backers from Kickstarter, please do us the favor of spreading the word among those you know who may like it (link is https://gum.co/iwZzV)! If you’re not a backer, you can grab the issue below!

A Case of the Hiccups

After looking at feedback from a number of you, I decided to change the lettering on Super to the more traditional all-caps style that comics typically have. I had felt like changing it because I realized that there was no artistic justification for it and the majority of people stating their preference for the classic look sealed the deal for me.

Since there was a sale on over at Comicraft, fine purveyor of comic fonts, I went ahead and bought a very nice font that I liked. Of course, when changing a font and capitalization, you end up having to resize every dialogue box and word balloon. And once I began doing that, I also found myself fixing things that I’d missed during the making of the preview book (like a typo nobody had discovered to that point!) and making a final pass at the dialogue, adding and changing some things along the way.

Once I was happy with everything, I went about trying figure out the best way to create a PDF file for everyone that was of a good quality and not too large of a file. I finally gave in and taught myself how to use a program that I’ve had for years but never bothered with previously that could handle the job. I ended up with a file that clocks in at about 12 megabytes, which will send easily enough through most email clients.

And with that, here we are. If you check your email that you provided on the survey, you’ll find issue one of the book waiting for you. If you don’t see an email from between 9 and 10pm for today (3-12-16), check your spam folder, and contact us if you didn’t get it for some reason. As stated in the email it’s attached to, these are DRM free, so feel free to put the book on any device you want as much as you want!

Please send us letters about the issue to print in future installments or fan art if you feel like it, and we’ll see you again in eight weeks for issue two!

Thanks, everyone!

Ring in the New (Issues)!

It’s come to the point where enough people have responded to their surveys that I can start sending out digital issues of Super, starting with the re-lettered issue one. There are still some stragglers, but I’ve put in a solid effort to get ahold of them and will continue to try as the issues come out. So if you’re one of those people who haven’t filled theirs out yet, please do!

I would like to send issue one out this weekend, but I have a favor to ask before I do. I’ve been considering using the typical uppercase style of comic lettering instead of the mixed-case I used in the preview edition. Could you all go over to the Aberrant Press Facebook page, look at the two versions of a page that I posted, and let me know what you think? Hey, while you’re there, you can give the page a “like”!

After the first issue is sent out, we’ll be putting out an issue every six to eight weeks. Dan and Angel thought that would provide them a good amount of time to finish the end of the book and then get everything ready for the print edition.

Hope everyone is having a great new year so far!

Surveys Sent, Supporters!

Over the weekend, we sent out surveys so that we can begin sending out the digital version of issue one. Once most of the responses are in, we’ll get it out there. After that, the goal is to send out an issue every 4 to 6 weeks so that Dan and Angel have time to finish the rest of their pages. And once all that’s done, we’ll finally be able to start getting the print edition taken care of.

If for whatever reason, you do not have a program capable of reading PDF files, all you have to do is search Adobe Acrobat Reader. It’s free, and they even have it for your phones and tablets these days.

Back when we ran our Kickstarter campaign, there were a number of people I knew who weren’t able to pledge for various reasons. Now that the issues are at least coming out in the digital format, I’m going to offer them a deal before the print version comes out (just not quite as good a deal as you folks got). They’ll be able to purchase each digital issue for $2, or save a couple bucks and prepay the series for $10 (they’ll still have to buy the print edition separately when it comes out). So if you know anybody who missed out, or anybody who might be interested, please feel free to have them get in contact with us on Facebook at the link below:

Finally, if you want the issues in a format other than PDF, please message us to let us know so we can try to accommodate you. Thank you as always for your support and patience. We’re glad that the finish line is finally coming into focus.
