The Best Laid Plans of Nice Young Men…

I took several days off from my day job to get a darkroom set up so that we could start printing t-shirts. On the very first day, I blew out my back and have spent the last few days laid up. I now have two days left of five, and I still don’t know if my back is up to the labor of basically building a whole room. So with that, I think it’s time to dig up an old image that accurately illustrates how I’m feeling.

How I'm feeling right now.

Hey everyone! We have a few things that are moving right now, so I’m going to hit you with a bunch of fast updates right now.

First, it looks like we’ve added two colorists to our ranks officially and they are getting Brandon’s style down! My biggest concern in the hunt for colorists has been making sure that the book has a consistent look and these guys are adapting like pros! Brandon will be the team leader, setting the color themes for each scene and then delegating color duties to the others. Daniel continues to blast through the flats (you saw how those look last update). I really appreciate his help (pro bono!), so why not check out what he’s up to at Gett Comics?

Since I finished writing the book a long time ago and editing doesn’t take that much time creatively, I’ve moved on to inking a book I’ve had sitting on the shelf for a while. It’s a simple tale of a hitman haunted (literally) by the ghosts of the people he’s killed. It’s around 60 pages and once I have it finished, I’m going to send everyone who pledged to Super a digital copy!

This last weekend, we attended the Las Vegas Comic Expo at the Riviera Hotel & Casino. It was the first run of this event and hopefully they made enough money to justify coming back next year. There were a lot of folks who pledged in attendance, and they were all very gracious. I offered them all either a free print or one of our new mini sketchbooks as a thank you for their continued patience and I thought it’d be cool to extend that same offer to all of you. So if you are interested in obtaining a free mini sketchbook, let me know. I will find a convenient way to deliver all local ones and will mail any that are too far to deliver in person!

In fact, anyone local who would like to claim one can see us next at the Vegas Valley Comic Festival on November 3rd! Here’s their website: Vegas Valley Comic Book Festival If you look on the walls, you’ll see a number of banners we did for the show!

Finally, friend and pledge, Maxwell Alexander Drake is running his own Kickstarter campaign at the moment. Drake is a fantasy author with two novels in his Genesis of Oblivion Saga series out (third should be coming along shortly). He has teamed up with super-talented Jason Engle to produce a futuristic yarn. Check it out and throw them a couple bucks.

With that, I’ll leave you with the rendered color work for the pages by Brandon Lin. Next update will be the lettered pages as well as any new news!

Thanks to Mark Evanier for finding this.

Change of Gears…

As things continue moving on our project (albeit slowly), I have been doing a lot of thinking in regards to the amount of time everyone has had to wait to have a final product in their hands. Had I known that things would have ground to such a slow pace (not to mention the growth of the digital publishing market), I probably would have done this sooner. But hey, this is how we learn, right? So with that said, I’ve decided that instead of sending out rewards once they are all in hand, I’m going to start getting the story out sooner by releasing each of the book’s six sections digitally as soon as they are ready!

Every pledge level of the project involved the backer receiving a digital copy of the book upon completion, but now I will send you the issues in sequence as they get completed (with special bonus material) plus the complete book in a single digital version once the entire book is published! This way, the wait gets a little easier and I can start taking advantage of the way the market is currently by monetizing the content via the Apple Bookstore and the like. Again, in retrospect, this is what I should have done in the first place, because the color work has been getting done from random parts of the book and the first issue was initially skipped outright because I felt people would only be interested in seeing fresh pages. So Brandon has to start recoloring part one of the book before jumping back to the rest. Expect the completely redone first issue in the next few months.

In regards to progress on the colors, Brandon has been working at a steady rate, but the other colorists we floated offers out to have not signed on for anything solid yet. We have found a couple others who may be able to help out and are waiting to see what their level of interest/availability is.

Finally, last time around, we showed off Gilbert’s pencils of the script pages I’d written, which showed the changes that sometimes happen. Page two ended up with six panels instead of the four written. This time out, we have the flat colors, which were done by Daniel Blodgett (owner of Gett Comics). The flat colors are usually done by someone so that the color artist has an easier time making the finished product. Next time around, I’ll show you Brandon’s finished rendering before posting the final version that will see print!

Free Idea of the Day

Since the Republicans are trying to get Libertarian candidate Gary Johnson taken off ballots in key states, then the Democrats should do everything they can to make sure he stays on them. They can sell it as wanting to support a more open democracy and that their confidence in their ideas means that they have no fear of multiple parties.

And to be fair, here is a return strategy idea for Republicans: If the Democrats actually do something like this, then you should pump money into getting a Green Party candidate on the rolls/media exposure.

Like I said, they’re free ideas. If you’d like, you may use them without paying me anything or giving me credit. I have tons of ideas, so there’s no need to be greedy 😮
